Whole foods is another term used to describe the types of food found in these stores. Whole foods are foods that are not heavily processed, and often feature additional ingredients that are considered healthy, such as wheat. Foods labeled as organic are those that are grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. These items are considered healthier by many, as there is no risk of chemicals affecting the consumer's health. Many health food stores are worker owned cooperatives, or consumer cooperatives. Under this sort of organization, lower prices are possible, which was especially helpful back in the 1960s and 70s when these stores first became popular.
