Latin cuisine is the term that refers to the wide variety of foods from Latin American countries. Latin cuisine influenced by a wide range of different styles, from native American, to European to Asian, and even African. While each region and country in Latin America brings its own unique style of cuisine, there are some common links.
Some typical elements of Latin cuisine include dishes based on maize, such as tortillas, tamales, and pupusas. There are often paired with different types of salsas or other condiments such as guacamole, pico de gallo, chimichurri, and others. These spicy flavors are what many people associate with Latin cooking, but there are different blends and quantities of spices, leading to unique flavors in each country.
Latin cuisine is also known for its desserts. They tend to be very sweet in taste. Examples include:
dulce de leche, a milk-based syrup;
alfajor, a type of cookie common in Peru and other South American countries;
arroz con leche, more commonly known as rice pudding;
tres leches cake, a three-layer sponge cake;
teja, a dumpling-like confection made of majar blanco and fruit or nuts;
flan, a well known sweet caramel custard.
